A team from the animal rescue group Dogs of Chernobyl reported finding several stray dogs with blue fur in the exclusion zone. The group, part of the Clean Futures Fund , has tried several times to catch the animals but has not succeeded.
"We are on the ground catching dogs for sterilization and we came across three dogs that were completely blue. We are not sure exactly what is going," the organisation shared on Instagram , where their post has attracted significant attention.
The blue-colored canines have been spotted roaming near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant , the site of the devastating 1986 nuclear disaster. The rescue team suspects the unusual coloration might stem from chemical exposure rather than radiation.
"We do not know the reason and we are attempting to catch them so we can find out what is happening. Most likely they’re getting into some sort of chemical. They seem to be very active and at this point we have not been able to catch them,” the organisation added.
The images of the blue dogs have sparked widespread speculation online, with many social media users wondering if radiation from the historic nuclear accident could be responsible.
The dogs are believed to be descendants of pets abandoned during the emergency evacuation following the 1986 explosion at the Number Four RBMK reactor, which released massive amounts of radiation and created the ongoing exclusion zone.
Rescue workers continue their efforts to capture the unusual blue dogs to determine the cause of their coloration and provide any necessary medical treatment.
