Panaji: Ekta Nagar in Mapusa, on Sunday, witnessed tension after members of the Muslim community accused a woman from the majority community of repeatedly harassing them and damaging the decorations put up for Eid celebrations.
They alleged that in the past too, the woman had disrupted their religious events by playing loud music, abusing them and interfering with their functions. This year, she reportedly hurled abuses at women from the minority community, the residents alleged.
Police said the altercation led to the gathering of people in large numbers from the minority and majority communities near the residential site. Police had to intervene to prevent further escalation.
The woman was detained for questioning and later released after a warning, the police said. The minority community assembled outside the police station demanding strict action against the woman.
With additional deployment, police had the situation under control by late evening.
