'There's a new Colorsoft, but as a Kindle fan I'd buy this discounted Paperwhite'

I've been a Kindle fan for many years. I'm a habitual reader, using the Kindle every day. You probably think I'm embellishing that point, but it's true - Kindle is my safe space, how I unwind at the end of the day and how I drift off to sleep.

Amazon's line-up of devices can be a little confusing because there are four models to choose from but let me help: the best Kindle for most people is the Kindle Paperwhite. Let me back this up with exactly why I'd recommend the Paperwhite over any other Kindle model.

But before we get to the reasons, there's a staggeringly good deal on the Kindle Paperwhite. This model is refurbished, but you can get it for £115.19.

That's much cheaper than the £159.99 asking price of a brand new Paperwhite, and also cheaper than the £124.99 asking price in Amazon's recent sale. The £115.19 Kindle Paperwhite is a limited deal, and I have no idea how long it will last.

Amazon's Certified Refurbished devices are tested by Amazon, so they're fully functional and it comes with a one-year warranty, so you can buy with confidence while pocketing the cash you save.

But let's go back to why I'd choose the Paperwhite over other Kindle models.

First of all, it has a 7-inch display while the standard Kindle - the cheapest model - has a 6-inch display. I find that cheaper Kindle just a little too small. Sure, you can change the size of the text on a Kindle with a simple pinch, but at 7-inches, it's just about right.

The Kindle Colorsoft has the same size of display, but I don't need the colour. I don't read any books that use colour and the delivery of colour on the Kindle Colorsoft isn't as sharp as Amazon's black and white Kindles.

Henry Burrell, Deputy Technology Editor here at the Express said "most people probably don't need to spend this much to get a colour screen they will rarely benefit from," when he reviewed Amazon's colour ebook reader.

The Paperwhite offers the best illumination. While all Kindles now have a front-lit display for reading in the dark, the Paperwhite has more LEDs, so it's more even. It looks better than the standard Kindle when reading at night.

This front light can also be adjusted for colour temperature, which can make reading at night more comfortable on your eyes. Moving it to a slightly warmer hue reduces the blue light emission, so it is less likely to disturb your sleep.

Beyond that, the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite updated the display tech to give faster page turns. Those pages turn 25% faster than the previous models, so it just feels smoother to read.

Yes, the lack of page turn buttons is still annoying, but tapping or swiping through a book is better on the Paperwhite. If you really want buttons then the Kobo Libra Colour might be the reader for you - although I prefer the Kindle Store experience for getting books.

Finally - and this is an important point for holidaymakers - it's waterproof, so it doesn't matter if your tent leaks, you spill your drink on it, or you drop it in the pool. The Paperwhite will survive, while the basic Kindle doesn't offer that protection.

The battery that will last up to 12 weeks (although it will depend on how much you read), and as a package, the Paperwhite is the best e-book reader to choose, in my opinion. The discount on the refurbished model just sweetens the deal.
