Self-titled "coffee snobs" put over 10 instant Americano coffees to the test to see which one came out on top, and you'd be surprised to see which brands the supermarket scored higher than.
According to Sky News, the coffee taking the number one spot was in fact a Tesco own brand - Tesco's Finest Americano Barista Style Coffee. It came out with an average score of 8.8 and was priced as one of the cheaper options on the list at just 3.95.
In order to approach the testing with fair variables, they tried drinking one black, one with milk, and one with milk and sugar for each brand. As part of the process, they had to score each drink on smell, taste, and body, marking them out of 10.
After drinking the Tesco Americano, the report claimed: "Our testers rated it highly for the biscuity, smoky, chocolatey taste, interesting flavour profile and nice finish." It's quite the impressive feat for the supermarket brand, as it was rivalling market favourites such as Nescafe, Kenco and Illy.
At the very opposite end of the results, as the most expensive on the list was the Illy Classico blend. The Italian brand's product is priced at an eye-watering £7.15 for instant coffee, and yet it only managed an average score of 1.5.
The "authentic Italian" product's description claims: "For your perfect Americano coffee, simply pour 2 teaspoons of instant coffee into your cup and add 180 ml of hot water, just off the boil. Mix and enjoy..." Although tasters were not a fan of the "premium" blend.
In second place as the most popular amongst these avid coffee drinkers was Truestart's "barista grade" instant coffee. Its average score was an 8, which is impressive for a coffee that is only priced at £3.98. While it was so close to being the number one, some claimed it had a bitter aftertaste but still carried a "rich flavour" that builds with every sip.
The overall ranking was as follows:
Tesco - £3.95
Truestart - £3.98
Costa - £3.50
M&S - £4.50
Nescafe - £6.50
Sainsbury's - £3.50
Kenco - £4.75
Aldi - £2.89
Lidl - £2.89
Morrisons - £3.75
Illy - £7.15
