Wearing white clothing can come with so much anxiety because the moment something drops or spills on your outfit, it feels like game over. Attempting to remove a stain from white garments is a challenge that no one likes to take part in, and it can feel impossible. No matter how many times you try and wash the marks off your favourite t-shirt, it just never seems to completely go away, and after repeated cycles of washing, the white colour washes out, leaving the clothes to look more grey.
However, when it comes to trying to get rid of stains, though seemingly impossible, there is actually a way to do it, and everything you need is a kitchen staple that is already in your cupboard.
Home appliance company Bosch revealed a shocking yet game-changing method that simply involves salt. Describing the ingredient as a "suprisingly effective removing remedy," it explained that salt, along with water, can work wonders in getting rid of stains.
It said: "Salt can be added to cold water to create a soak for white clothes. Leave for four hours, add detergent and then wash as usual. It is also very good at soaking up fresh red wine stains."
The company also shared advice on what things to avoid when trying to remove tough stains from white clothes, including using "chlorinated bleach on yellow stains, as it could make them worse".
Another crucial thing you should avoid doing is mixing water and oil.
The company added: "If the stain is oil-based, don't add water, as it will be repelled and could cause the mark to settle. Instead, use a dry paper towel."
When using water to get rid of a stain it should never be hot, especially if you don't know what caused the stain. If it is protein-based, the heat from the water will make the stain worse.
So, the next time you enjoy a glass of wine and if a spill happens to take place, get the clothes in salted water as soon as possible, so that when it is washed it comes out good as new.
