Novak Djokovic suffered an emotional defeat to Jannik Sinner on Wimbledon's Centre Court on Friday. For the first time since 2012, the Serb suffered defeat in a semi-final match at the All England Club. Djokovic had reached six consecutive finals here and he knew this was his best chance of winning a historic 25th Grand Slam title. But it wasn't to be, and it felt like the end of an era on Wimbledon's biggest showcourt.
Sinner got off to a flying start, breaking Djokovic twice to take the first set. He then stormed back from 0-3 down in the third to win 6-3 6-3 6-4 in under two hours. It was tough to witness the seven-time champion here, and the sport's greatest of all time, struggling to move towards the end. The 38-year-old didn't even run for the ball on Sinner's second match point.
No. 6 seed Djokovic looked emotional as the match went on and lingered as he waved goodbye to the Centre Court crowd before walking off his favourite stage in tennis.
This is Sinner's fifth consecutive win over Djokovic. The Italian world No. 1 becomes just the second man to win five straight matches against Djokovic, after Rafael Nadal went on a winning stretch from Beijing 2008 to Madrid 2009.
We now know that Sunday's championship will be a rematch of the French Open final, as Sinner takes on two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The top seed will be out for revenge after blowing three championship points in the thrilling five-hour and 29-minute Roland Garros final.
