NatWest will close 55 additional bank branches later this year, on top of the 53 already scheduled to close in 2025. The bank's decision forms part of a wider industry trend as more customers shift to online banking services.
According to NatWest, over 80% of their current account holders now use digital platforms, and most new accounts are opened online. While the closures will begin rolling out in the coming months, with 31 branches scheduled to close in September alone, NatWest has stated it is investing in alternative options such as upgraded branches, community pop-ups, and partnerships with Post Offices and banking hubs to continue supporting customers. A statement on NatWest's website reads: "Banking has changed dramatically in recent years, with an increased demand for mobile and online services, as our customers benefit from a faster and easier way to bank."

It added: "Closing a branch is a decision we take very seriously. We know it can affect those less confident with the alternatives we offer. We'll always work hard to guide and support you through the changes and find the best way to serve you from now on."
