Liverpool could be about to make a huge profit by selling one of their in-demand stars ahead of the new Premier League season. It has already been a busy summer at Anfield, with the Reds welcoming two new players. They signed Florian Wirtz for a club-record transfer fee last week and followed up on Thursday by landing Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.
Arne Slot has also waved goodbye to Trent Alexander-Arnold since the end of the previous campaign. The former Reds defender now plays for Real Madrid, who signed him for a £10million fee just before the expiry of his Anfield contract. Now, it seems another Liverpool star could be about to follow Alexander-Arnold out of the club.
Over the last few months, Harvey Elliott has made it clear that he wants to play regular football, whether that is at Liverpool or elsewhere.
He is currently ripping it up for England under-21s, having scored a brace in their Euros semi-final victory over the Netherlands. His form is thought to be attracting interest from several Premier League clubs and Liverpool are reportedly willing to cash in.
However, the Reds will only consider letting Elliott leave if they can make a tidy profit. According to The Athletic, they have slapped a £40m price tag on the 22-year-old and will refuse to sell him for anything less.
This would see Liverpool make a killing on the nominal fee they paid to sign him from Fulham back in 2021. Following a tribunal, they were ordered to shell out £1.5m in compensation as well as £2.8m in contingent amounts depending on Elliott's performance.
His semi-final heroics for the Young Lions earned high praise from ex-England striker Jermain Defoe, who described Elliott as a 'top, top player' and urged him to join a club where he can be the main man.
"There'll be a lot of clubs watching this tournament," said Defoe on Channel 4. "We said it before, he's too good to not be playing, when you're producing in big tournaments like this against the best players.
"The two goals that we saw this evening, he's a top, top player. For him, he just needs to go out and play, get himself in a team where he's one of the main players, and just go out and express yourself and show how good you are."
Joe Cole was in full agreement, with the former Chelsea man adding: "He's done a great job for Liverpool, and if he decides to move on, I still feel there's levels.
"For a player to come to a tournament and do what he's done, there's levels for him to go up again, and I'd love to see him playing with that kind of passion and happiness on his face every week."
