A bus smashed into a low bridge in Bolton on Friday night, ripping off the roof, with debris left scattered across the road. The Bee Network bus collided with the bridge on Weston Street at around 7.45pm on Friday, November 7, Manchester Evening News reports.
There were no passengers onboard at the time of the collision in the Burnden area of Bolton, located south of the city's town centre. It's understood that the driver didn't sustain any serious injuries, Tranport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said.
The rail bridge is 3.7m high and has a "low bridge" sign on it. The bus, which is operated by Go North West, was being driven to the depot when the incident occurred, TfGM said.
The road was closed by Greater Manchester Police while the bus is moved and the damage cleared away.
Photos of the aftermath show the roof of the vehicle lying on the road, apprently smashed off as the bus passed under the bridge.
A spokesperson for TfGM said: "At around 7.45pm tonight, an out of service bus collided with a low bridge on Weston Street in Bolton, causing extensive damage to the vehicle's roof.
"The bus, operated by Go North West, was being driven back to the depot at the time of the incident, was not in service and had no passengers on board.
"Greater Manchester Police attended the scene and the road has been closed as a precaution while the bus is moved.
"Thankfully there were no passengers on board and we understand that the driver has not suffered serious injuries.
"We are supporting the police in their immediate response and will work closely with the operator to understand the exact circumstances that led to the collision."
