With the Bihar Assembly elections approaching, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a major initiative aimed at empowering women in the state. On Tuesday, he launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, under which 7.5 million women have received the first installment of ₹10,000 each directly in their bank accounts. This financial assistance is designed to help women start their own small businesses and move toward self-reliance.
Addressing the Jeevika sisters during the launch, the Prime Minister called it a historic day for the women of Bihar. “When a sister or daughter finds employment, her dreams take flight, and her respect in society grows,” he said, adding that the blessings of women during Navratri give strength to the government’s efforts.
PM Modi also took a sharp dig at the Congress, stating that earlier, only a fraction of central funds reached the beneficiaries due to corruption and middlemen. “Earlier, if one rupee was sent from Delhi, only 15 paise would reach. Now, every rupee goes directly into your account. No one can steal it,” he said, stressing that transparent governance under his leadership ensures women receive the full benefits.
The scheme provides an initial grant of ₹10,000, with a provision for additional financial support of up to ₹2 lakh in future phases. Women can use this money in diverse fields such as agriculture, animal husbandry, handicrafts, sewing, knitting, and other small-scale businesses. PM Modi encouraged women to utilize this support to open small shops selling groceries, utensils, cosmetics, toys, and stationery, thereby enhancing household income and independence.
The Prime Minister also linked the scheme to the government’s broader vision of creating “Lakhpati Didis”—women who earn over one lakh annually. He expressed confidence that Bihar would lead the country in producing the highest number of Lakhpati Didis. “This scheme is not just financial aid; it is a step toward women’s empowerment and the rise of self-reliant Bihar,” he added.
