After India's crushing defeat, coach Gautam Gambhir came out with a box of excuses. He has given the same reaction to the defeat against England as was expected. The same old thing that the team does not have experience. Therefore, critics should not be in a hurry to conclude every match. This can affect the morale of the players.
The first Test between India and England was played in Leeds. India scored 471 runs in the first innings and 364 in the second innings. India scored 3 centuries in the first innings and 2 in the second innings. The hard work of the batsmen was wasted due to weak bowling.
India had given England a target of 371 runs to win, which it achieved by losing 5 wickets. Barring Jasprit Bumrah, the rest of the bowlers looked ineffective.
Bumrah had taken 5 wickets in England's first innings.
Gautam Gambhir said in the post-match press conference on Tuesday, 'If we leave Bumrah and Siraj in this pace attack, there is not much experience. One bowler (Prasidh Krishna) has played four Tests. One (Harshit Rana) has played two Tests and one (Arshdeep Singh) has not played a Test yet. It does not matter in ODIs. But on difficult tours of England and Australia, it is like throwing them into the ocean. If we start judging bowlers after every Test, then how will we let them learn.'
Clarification on getting only 16 overs from Shardul
Gautam Gambhir also defended Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur. He said that Prasidh has all the potential to become a good Test match bowler. Prasidh Krishna took five wickets in the match but also gave a lot of runs. On the question of getting only 16 overs from Shardul Thakur in the match, Gambhir said, 'Sometimes the captain goes with his confidence. Ravindra Jadeja gave us the control we needed in the first innings. This enabled us to rotate our other pacers.' He said, 'We know what Shardul's quality is. That's why he is in the team.'
An emotional card was played in the end
Gambhir also praised Shubman Gill's brilliant batting in the first innings and said that he should be given time for captaincy. Gambhir then played the emotional card. He said, 'Every defeat is bad. It does not matter whether it is a young team or an experienced team. This is the Indian team. This is not an excuse for defeat because we represent 140 crore Indians.'
