Corrie star Maureen Lipman married her fiance David Turner last Sunday (7 September) and the pictures are beautiful. But one government action disrupted the ceremony.

Maureen, 79, wore pink as she wed David, also 79. The pair got engaged in September last year, when Maureen decided propose during a train journey.

The wedding photos show the day to be beautifully thought out, with white and pink flowers, matching Maureen's dress, decorating the venue. David, meanwhile, wore a dark grey suit and a kippah. But not everything went to plan.

During the ceremony, the nationwide government emergency alert went off, interrupting the service as "sirens" blared from guests' phones.

Talking to This Morning, Maureen's former Gogglebox partner Gyles Brandreth explained that, thankfully, everyone was forewarned about the situation, and with quite a sweet message for the bride and groom. Gyles said: "At 2:30pm, the rabbi said, 'I have written to the Prime Minister, telling him that there's going to be this exciting wedding, do you have a message?'

"And the Prime Minister replied, 'I'm not able to be here but I've arranged for sirens to be sound all over the country'."

Maureen was snapped open-mouthed as those "sirens" went off.

Gyles was also the person who revealed the date of Maureen's wedding. On his podcast, Rosebud, he said: "Dame Maureen Lipman, this Sunday I will be going to her wedding. She's getting married.

"She's getting married in the morning! I think it's actually the afternoon. I'll be there. Isn't it fantastic? To get married in your 80th year is fantastic."

Maureen has joked about her and David's age at their wedding. Writing in the Spectator, she highlighted that it was a combined age of 156. "With a combined age of 156, we are going to get married," she wrote.

She added details of how they got engaged: "On a train coming back from Edinburgh he mentioned that it was the minor festival of Tu B'Av – a day when a Jewish woman can ask a man to marry her.

"Unable to resist the gag, I slid under the table separating us onto one knee and asked him for his hand. To my surprise and slight panic, he gave it."

Maureen has been married before. She was married to scriptwriter Jack Rosenthal for 30 years before he died in 2004 and they had two children together, Amy, 50, and Adam, 48. David is a father of three.

Continuing her written piece, Maureen shared how their children reacted. "All reactions were warm, and all were individual.

"One child said that he needed time 'to process it'. We broke the news to another as he slid leaves into a new dining table, transforming the scene into a Jack Rosenthal play – one with, I like to think, a happy ending."
