Electric shock is a serious condition. With the right information and quick action, life can be saved. Always remember to protect yourself first, then help the victim.

Electric shock or electrocution is a serious accident which can be fatal. In such a situation, it is very important to take timely and correct steps so that the victim's life can be saved. Instead of panicking, stay calm and take these steps immediately.
Do this work first
- Safety First: The first and foremost thing is to ensure your own safety. Do not try to touch the victim until the power source is turned off. If you touch the victim without turning off the power source, you may also get an electric shock.
- Switch off the main switch: If possible, immediately switch off the main power supply of the house or place. This is the safest way.
- Remove the plug: If the appliance is plugged in, carefully remove the plug from the socket.
- Use an insulated object: If you cannot turn off the power immediately, use an insulating object such as dry wood, a plastic stick, rubber glove, or dry cloth to separate the victim from the power source. Do not use metal or wet objects. Separate the victim by pushing or pulling him from a distance.
What to do after turning off the power source?
- Once the victim is separated from electrical contact, take these steps immediately.
- Call 108 (ambulance) or 112 (police/emergency service) without delay. Tell them that there has been an electric shock and you need help.
How to examine the victim?
- Breathing check: See if the victim is breathing. If he is not breathing, immediately start CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) if you are trained.
- Check the pulse: Try to feel the pulse in the neck or wrist.
- Check for injuries: Electric shock can cause burns. Check for burns on the victim's body, especially where the electric shock occurred. Electric shock can also damage internal organs, even if there are no visible injuries from the outside.
Treatment of Burns
- If the skin is burned, pour cold (but not ice) water or place a cool, wet bandage on the burned area.
- Cover the burnt area with a clean cloth.
- Do not try to burst burn blisters.
- Keep the body warm: If the victim is feeling cold or is in shock, try to keep him warm by covering him with blankets or clothes.
- Do not move the victim If you think the victim has an internal injury or a bone may be broken, do not move the victim until medical help arrives.
Some extra precautions to avoid
- Always stay away from damaged wires or loose plugs.
- Do not touch electrical equipment with wet hands.
- Keep children away from electrical sockets and wires.
- Exercise caution when using electrical appliances near water.
