Popular singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has landed in controversy after casting Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in his upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3. The announcement sparked strong reactions online, with many Indian netizens expressing disappointment over his choice, especially amid the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan.
A cryptic post adds to the buzz
Amid the storm, Diljit shared a mysterious post on Instagram that said, “Censored before release?” This was not about Sardaar Ji 3, but instead referred to Punjab 95, a delayed film based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. The film, directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, has faced censorship issues and remains unreleased.
What is Sardaar Ji 3 about?
Sardaar Ji 3 is the third part of Diljit’s popular fantasy horror-comedy franchise. It’s set for release on 27 June, but only overseas. In a promotional post, Diljit wrote, “Sardaar Ji 3 Releasing 27th June Overseas Only. FADH LAO BHOOND DIAN LATTAN.”
The film’s trailer was released on Monday, and while it created buzz, it also received backlash due to Hania Aamir’s involvement.
Film workers’ body reacts strongly
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees ( FWICE) has officially condemned Diljit and his team for working with a Pakistani artist. In a statement, they urged the Indian government to take strict action, including cancelling the filmmakers’ passports and banning the film’s release across India.
FWICE also accused Hania Aamir of previously sharing anti-India views on social media and questioned the decision to involve her in an Indian production.
Still promoting the film globally
Despite the backlash, Diljit continues to promote Sardaar Ji 3 internationally. The situation has raised questions over artistic freedom, censorship, and cross-border collaborations in the current political climate.
