Artificial Intelligence: India has taken a historic step in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by releasing new AI governance guidelines.
India has taken a historic step in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by releasing new AI governance guidelines. These rules aim to ensure that AI is used responsibly and transparently in the country, ensuring no harm is caused to individuals, communities, or the environment. These guidelines were issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under its IndiaAI Mission.
During this initiative, Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, stated that the country will now move forward on the principle of Do-No-Harm. He stated that AI technology should be used for the development of society, not against or to cause harm.
Ministry Secretary S. Krishnan stated that India's new AI framework will be completely human-centric. Its aim is to make AI a tool that supports and empowers humans, but not replaces them. The government wants AI technology to be developed in a trustworthy, transparent, and ethical manner, ensuring its benefits reach every citizen.
These guidelines establish seven key ethical principles and six major governance pillars for AI developers and tech companies, including key areas such as data privacy, security, accountability, and preventing bias.
To develop this framework, the government formed a special expert committee, chaired by Professor Balaraman Ravindran. This committee included experts from NITI Aayog, Microsoft Research India, IIT Madras, and the iSPIRT Foundation, who jointly developed the AI policy.
The government also announced the India-AI Impact Summit 2026, which will be held in Delhi in February 2026. The conference will bring together AI experts, policymakers and industry leaders from around the world, where there will be in-depth discussions on how to use AI responsibly for the benefit of society.
